Morning everyone, and welcome to Issue #2 of the Great Barr Insider.

A big thank you to the new subscri — genuinely appreciated. The goal here is simple: cut through the Facebook noise and give you a quick, reliable briefing on what’s actually affecting your week across B43 and B44.

Let’s get into it.

🚧 The Traffic Desk: Scott Arms Gridlock

If it feels worse than usual this week, that’s because it is. A number of roadworks are stacking on top of each other — here’s what to be aware of:

  • Newton Road & Monksfield Ave: Temporary lights, a reduced speed limit, and lane restrictions are currently in place as part of ongoing works. There’s also disruption near Pear Tree Drive.

  • A34 Walsall Road: Lane closures are affecting routes between Scott Arms and Perry Barr during the daytime.

  • M6 J7: Heavy congestion continues to build, with queues often stretching back towards Junctions 5 and 6 — particularly southbound.

Verdict:

This isn’t clearing up anytime soon. If you’re heading through Scott Arms, your safest windows are before 9 AM or after 4 PM — anything in between, expect delays.

🚨 On The Radar: Safety & Crime

  • Scott Arms Area: There’s been a noticeable increase in police presence around the precinct, with activity focused on anti-social behaviour.

  • Pheasey & Nether Hall: Off-road bikes have been reported around Suttons Drive and Chapel Lane, with patrols in the area.

  • Vehicle Crime: There’s been renewed concern locally around car-related theft. Visible deterrents like steering wheel locks are worth using right now.

Verdict:

Expect to see more visible patrols in certain areas. Simple precautions are worth taking at the moment.

🎒 Next Week Shift: Easter Holidays

Schools across Great Barr break up this Friday — and that’s going to change how the area moves for the next couple of weeks.

Here’s what that actually means:

  • Morning traffic should ease slightly (no school runs)

  • Midday traffic will likely be busier — more people out with kids

  • Retail parks and supermarkets tend to get busier during the day

  • Parks and open spaces will fill up quickly if the weather’s decent

Verdict:

If you’ve got errands to run, go early. Afternoons are usually the busiest during school holidays.

🏘️ Community: Green Belt & Local Life

  • Wilderness Lane: The proposed development off Wilderness Lane has faced strong local opposition and remains one to watch in terms of future decisions.

  • Conservation Area Review: Attention is now shifting to the Great Barr Conservation Area, with proposals being discussed around potential boundary changes. Feedback is available via the council consultation hub.

  • Camera Club: The Great Barr Photographic Society meet every Thursday evening at the Great Barr Club on Queslett Road. They’ve got a wildlife photography presentation coming up next Thursday (April 2nd).

Verdict:

Planning and conservation changes are ongoing — worth keeping an eye on as updates come through.

🌤️ Over to you...

Since we’re all navigating roadworks (and school holidays) next week:

Who actually does the best Sunday roast in Great Barr — and who’s overrated?

Hit reply and let me know — your replies help shape future issues, and it also tells your email provider this is a real newsletter (so it doesn’t end up in spam).

If this was useful, forward it to one neighbour — that’s how this grows.

Stay patient with the lights, plan ahead where you can, and have a great weekend.

Cheers,
