Heritage Open Days is in its final weekend with some brilliant free local events to check out. A few road works to be aware of before heading out too.

🚧 Traffic & Roads

This weekend:

  • College Road (today Friday 17–Saturday 18 September): Road markings near Crossway Lane, Fairford Road and Epwell Road. Diversions in place

  • Birmingham Road (Friday 18 September, 9:30am–3pm): Lane closure for central reservation resurfacing opposite Merrions Close and Beacon Way

  • Old Walsall Road (Friday 18–Saturday 19 September, 9pm–5am): Overnight road works at the Rocky Lane junction in Hamstead Village near the Hamstead Fish Bar

  • Walsall Road (Sunday 20 September, 8am–6pm): Severn Trent lane closure near Alexander Stadium and Birmingham Crematorium

Next week:

  • Old Walsall Road (Monday 21–Tuesday 22 September, 8pm–5am): Overnight Centro works near 5 Star Day Nursery and the Miners' Memorial

  • Dyas Road (Thursday 24 September, 9:30am–3:30pm): Severn Trent road works near Birdbrook Road and Blenheim Way

  • Walsall Road (Monday 28–Wednesday 30 September): Lane closure for tree felling from Great Barr Muslim Foundation up past Tower Hill

📰 Local News

The Tramper at Sandwell Valley: A new all-terrain mobility scooter is now available to hire from the Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre, part of the Countryside Mobility Hire Scheme.

Life-Saving Equipment Donated: Seven bleed control kits and a new defibrillator have been donated by local businesses including GB Tyres and MAC Surfacing, now installed at Bleakhouse and Blackheath libraries.

🎉 What's On This Weekend

Perry Hall parkrun (Saturday, 19 Sep): The free, weekly 5k community event takes place every Saturday at 9:00 AM at Perry Hall Park. Walk, jog, run, or spectate, and join the regulars for a post-run coffee at Goodfillas on Walsall Road.

Heritage Open Days (until Sunday 20 September): Free guided tours of Oak House Museum, showcases at Wednesbury Museum and rare cellar tours of Haden Old Hall.

Bromwich Hall Alive: Medieval Mayhem (Saturday 19–Sunday 20 September, 11am–4pm): Free medieval combat displays, knight school and archery at West Bromwich's oldest building.

Birmingham Heritage Week (until Sunday 20 September): Building tours and heritage walks across the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth.

📅 Looking Ahead

  • Live Acoustic Music at Great Barr Library (Monday, 21 Sep): Hosted by the Friends of Great Barr Library, local artist Martin Hubbard will be performing his original acoustic folk songs live at 2:15 PM.

  • Free Older Drivers Session (Monday, 21 Sep): A supportive 'Driving Safer for Longer' session for drivers aged 60+ is taking place at Sandwell Council House from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

  • Westlife & Boyzone Tribute (Saturday, 26 Sep): Head down to The Great Barr Hotel next weekend for "Westzone", featuring a three-course meal, tribute performance, and a disco starting at 7:00 PM.

  • Community Sports Grants Deadline (Friday, 2 Oct): Local community and faith organisations have until 2 October to apply for grants of up to £10,000 to deliver sports and physical activity projects.
